Hey peoples, me here, and I am proud to announce that I have (technically) finished my Original Work project! Now I know the tone of this blog is vastly different from the previous one on December 5th, since I have essentially gone through multiple character arcs in the span of about two weeks.
First, I discovered that Unreal Engine 5 takes alot of resources to run, constantly maxing out my desktop and causing many issues. Second, the quality of "realism" that is required by the props for Virtual Production is way too high for me; the best I can texture is a slice of bread. Thirdly, Virtual Production itself is hard, although it combines so many aspects together, simply being a jack-of-all trades is not good enough: every part has to be essentially perfect. I needed to be a king-of-all trades which I am not. Lastly, I had lacked the foresight that maybe LED screens would be very expensive, as Virtual Production is a studio to company level production budget in order to even get the resources and skills to do it.
What I managed to create in these few months is a video of a rendering of a forest with a lake, even if most of the assets were not created by me. That 7 second video of the rendering also took up around 2 gigabytes of my hard drive space. That said, I am quite proud of the aspect of realism of said forest, as I had challenged some of my classmates to differentiate between the render and actual real photos and they struggled to correctly pick it out.
The last part of the blog is that I have been withholding a secret. During these months while working on my Original Work and ISM stuff I was also part of the Esports Club, and I found that I had much more fun, enjoyment, and motivation working on the Esports stuff rather than my ISM work. So, I figured, why not make my Esports work my ISM work? Am I even able to switch topics this late in the semester?
Yes. Apparently so.
So now my ISM topic would be something Esports related; I have not figured out the fine details yet, but soon, maybe even during winter break, I might. That does not mean I have completely abandoned Virtual Production however, as I might return to Unreal Engine if I manage to get my hands on a better computer, and I still use aspects of Virtual Production such as video editing to create assets or videos for my Esports work.
That end's it for now. See you in January.
